Malachite is a basic copper carbonate which forms on the surface of copper deposits due to the alteration of sulphides in contact with the air. It is a mineral that is almost always found with a microcrystalline structure in a radial form but also with a fibrous structure with a mamellar and kidney-shaped surface. The largest deposits of malachite are found in Africa in the Congo and Zambia, in Russia, in Australia and in the United States. In Italy the most famous deposit is the one on the island of Elba.
The name derives from the Greek malachee which means mallow, due to its green color like the leaves of the plant. The coloring is due to the copper oxide: intense green alternating in lighter and darker curved areas.
It is one of the best-known minerals as a decorative material for objects; fine carvings are the beautiful columns of St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg. In our Didoni laboratory we create many furnishing and design objects with this stone for a refined clientele in search of the unique and inimitable piece.
In crystallotherapy, malachite is a stone that gives protection and peace with its energy. Promotes relaxation, promotes positive thoughts, relieves stress and tension, promotes peaceful sleep. It has a strong absorption power and therefore should be placed over the suffering areas to discharge pain and negative energy.
