Staurolite, the fairy stone

Characteristics and deposits

Staurolite is a mineral, sub-nesosilicate of aluminum and iron, slightly containing also magnesium, which in a corresponding quantity replaces iron. The crystals are of the trimetric group, they appear in elongated prisms, often twinned in a cross, sometimes in an oblique cross. Precisely for this reason it is also called the stone of the cross. The color is reddish-brown, rather dark.

It is found in the Pyrenees, in Algeria, in Switzerland, in various locations in the United States, in Brazil and above all in Brittany where it is still called the cross of Brittany due to its frequent cross-branching.

Properties of Staurolite

The legend of the fairy stone

Staurolite is also known as Fairy Stone or Fairy Cross.

There are several legends behind this mineral, one tells that staurolite was born from the tears of the fairies, who, upon learning of the crucifixion of Jesus, despaired and wept for him. Their tears, in contact with the stones on the ground, solidified, giving life to the curious mineral formations in the shape of a cross.
