Larimar, stone of the Caribbean

Larimar is a precious stone distinguished by its blue color reminiscent of the clear waters of the Caribbean, hence its nickname. In fact, larimar is found only in the Dominican Republic, making it highly sought after in the world of minerals and jewelry.

Origin and Discovery

Larimar was discovered in 1916 but only became popular in the 1970s thanks to the artisan Miguel Mendez. "Larimar" is a combination of the name of Mendez's daughter, Larissa, and the Spanish word for sea, "mar," referring to its characteristic blue color.

Legend and Properties

Larimar is also called the "Stone of Atlantis" because an American prophet from the 19th century predicted the arrival of a healing stone from Atlantis (the prophet believed that Atlantis was located around the Caribbean). For this reason, larimar is associated with peace and emotional healing. Wearing larimar brings calm and balance, making it not only a piece of jewelry but also a wellness amulet. It can help reduce stress and improve communication, instilling serenity and mental clarity.

Larimar in Jewelry

Larimar is particularly prized in jewelry for its aesthetic appeal. Its sky-blue hue, reminiscent of waves gently crashing on the shore, makes each piece unique and captivating. Whether set in a ring, necklace, or bracelet, larimar adds a touch of natural elegance that does not go unnoticed.

It is used to create a wide range of jewelry; however, due to its hardness, it must be handled with care to avoid possible scratches and damage. Its maintenance is similar to that of other delicate gems: larimar requires cleaning with a soft cloth and warm water, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
