Natural agate: how it is formed

Agate is a mineral, variety of Chalcedony, that is composed of silica (SiO₂). It is characterized by a structure with concentric zones of variable color, opaque and transparent. All varieties of semi-transparent chalcedony with various impurities are called Agate, in which the zoned structure and various colors are visible to the naked eye.The color is due to the presence of iron salts and can be green, red, blue, black or whitish .

The agates form the filling of more or less large cavities, within various eruptive rocks, especially in the basic ones; they are produced by the expansion of the gases and vapors of the magma.
