Malachite, the protective stone

Malachite is a basic copper carbonate that forms on the surface of copper deposits due to the alteration of sulphides in contact with air. It is a mineral that is almost always found with a microcrystalline structure in a radial shape but also with a fibrous structure with a mamellow-shaped and kidney-shaped surface.

The largest deposits of malachite are found in Africa in Congo and Zambia, in Russia, Australia and the United States. In Italy the most famous deposit is the one on the island of Elba.

The name derives from the Greek malachee which means mallow, due to its green color like the leaves of the plant. The color is due to copper oxide: intense green alternating in lighter and darker curved areas.

History and origins

Malachite has a long history that has its roots in antiquity. Used for ornamental and ritual purposes, this green stone has been associated with several cultures and civilizations over the centuries. From Russia to Egypt, from Greece to the Middle East, malachite has always fascinated with its vibrant color and mystical properties.

The ancient Egyptians, for example, considered it a sacred stone associated with the goddess Hathor, a symbol of love and motherhood. It was used to create amulets, jewelry and cult objects.

In Imperial Russia, malachite was widely used for decoration of palaces and churches. St. Michael's Chapel in the Hermitage of St. Petersburg is a stunning example of how this stone was used to create highly valuable works of art and artifacts.

In ancient Greece, malachite was associated with deities such as Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and was often used to create jewelry and ornamental objects. The Romans, however, used malachite for decorative and ritual purposes, believing that it had protective and healing properties.
