Chalcedony is the generic name given to quartz when it occurs in compact masses of microcrystalline silica with a fibrous texture. The name derives from Kalkeedon, an ancient mining city of Bithynia, a Roman province located in present-day Turkey. Quartz is one of the most abundant and widespread minerals in nature: chalcedony also has various deposits, ours comes from Malawi. The stone is semi-transparent or opaque and can be found in various shades: its colors are white, pink, blue, red and grey. Blue chalcedony is certainly the best known.
