Labradorite, all the characteristics and properties of the charm stone

The multicolor Labradorite stone

Labradorite is the stone with iridescent colored reflections discovered by a missionary in the Canadian peninsula of Labrador from which it takes its name.

Characteristic of this variety of plagioclase feldspar is the magnificent play of multicolored metallic reflections, known as "labradorescence", which appears on a dull gray-green background. The various shades in the color changes are in turn related to the presence of inclusions of ilmenite, iron, titanite and magnetite.

It is rare to find specimens of semi-transparent clear labradorite with a marked blue labradorescence whose appearance is similar to moonstone and with this type of material very valuable gems can be obtained.

Origin of Labradorite

Labradorite forms in various igneous and metamorphic rocks. It is the main mineral in plutionic rocks (anorthosites) and is also present in lunar rocks.

The main deposits are found in Canada, Finland and Madagascar.

Inuit legend has it that the Northern Lights were once imprisoned in the rock along the coast of Labrador. A warrior with spear strikes freed most of the lights trapped in the rock while those that remained there gave rise to labradorite.
